CHAPTER 14

PAIGE DIDN’T REALIZE she was dreaming until a ringtone annoyed her. Grasping for her phone on the nightstand, she answered. “Hello?”

“I can’t believe you’re still sleeping while I waited up most of the night to hear what happened,” Claire fussed.

“What time is it?” Paige still hadn’t opened her eyes.

“It’s eight o’clock.”

“Eight on Saturday morning?” She rolled on her back. “No wonder I’m still asleep.”

“Oh, no you don’t. Wake up. You asked me to pray, so now I want to hear about the fruits of my labor. So how is Blake?”

“Handsome as ever. Sweet.” Paige forced her lashes to flutter until they opened. Her bedroom came into focus, and so did the memories of last night. “Our singles ministry played rounds of the Dating Game. It was perfect. The timing couldn’t have been better for him to hear what it takes to be in a godly relationship. Afterward, a couple of us went out to eat. Although I wasn’t ready for our night to end, he had drills this morning, so we said good night.”

“That’s it? No romantic vibes?” Claire sighed.

“There is nothing sexier than a man who hungers and thirsts after God’s righteousness. He was genuinely interested in the Dating Game’s Q&A. Blake walked me to my car. The moment was surreal as we stared into each other’s eyes, wondering what the other was thinking. I could tell he was battling to say something—or maybe to kiss me.” She pouted. “Instead, he wrapped me in his arms and seemed reluctant to release me. He told me to text him when I made it home, and I did.”

Their brief embrace spoke to her heart of his tenderness. She wondered what her heart revealed to him. God told her to guard her heart, then to open it. Was it because Blake Cross could eventually be the one? Paige must have drifted off when she heard Claire call her name, then said goodbye. Perfect. She snuggled back under the covers.

Later Saturday afternoon, Paige drove to Olivette to visit with her parents. While her dad was stretched out in his recliner watching a Cardinals baseball game, she and her mother lounged outside on the deck and enjoyed the serenity.

“Do you remember Blake from the family reunion in Charleston?” she asked casually as they sipped on lemonade.

“Yes. The one who had a crush on you,” her mother gushed.

Paige giggled. “Yeah, and my crush is here in St. Louis. He came to the singles ministry last night.”

Straightening up, her mother’s mouth opened, but she seemed too flustered to say anything. She set her glass on the table and gave Paige her full attention. “I thought you didn’t plan to stay in contact with him.”

“I didn’t, but Mr. Cross had other plans. He got in contact with me, and we’ve been talking ever since. He’s here for some military drills this weekend.” She couldn’t contain her smile. “There’s something about Blake that I can’t ignore.”

“Ignore him,” her father said from the doorway. Clearly, he had been eavesdropping.
